Truth or Consequences New Mexico
Despite their name, Chicago’s self-described "over-driven alt-country" indie-rock band Truth or Consequences New Mexico draws from the city's recent decades of indie-rock. Equally influenced by Uncle Tupelo as relatively newer mainstays Ratboys, the two songwriters Cora Pancoast and Jack Parker weave alt-country and the harder edges of indie-rock together, along with their other disparate influences of folk, punk, and at times a touch of Midwest emo.
They released their second EP This Time Of Year (with tapes from Worry Records) in spring 2025, which better showcases their sound outside of a live context after their DIY-recorded debut TCNM in 2023 and also expanded the band’s songwriting as a four-piece. Their music has previously been shared by the Chicago Reader, The Big Takeover, Rosy Overdrive, Merry Go Round Magazine, Tuned Up, and more.
Swim Into The Sound wrote that lead single ("Seed of Doubt") is "the sort of grungy indie rock banger that would kill on a bill with Wednesday and Cryogeyser." Adobe & Teardrops wrote of the EP's second and final single "Between GA" that it's "intense and melodic — like the best indie rock from the 2010s, there’s a smorgasboard of influences but the commitment to the song itself rises above it all. Amidst the emotional intensity there’s a sense of discipline that makes Truth or Consequences stand out."
